Nathan Stubblefield demonstrated wireless telephony in Kentucky in 1902 powered from buried electrodes, died impoverished in 1928, and his son burned the papers. Nikola Tesla died in the Hotel New Yorker in January 1943 and the FBI ordered his belongings seized within hours. The FDA supervised the destruction of six tons of Wilhelm Reich's books and journals at the Gansevoort incinerator in August 1956. Viktor Schauberger signed a Texas agreement transferring his lifetime materials in August 1958 and died five days after returning to Austria. Hannes Alfven's theory of field aligned currents in the aurora was rejected by the Journal of Geophysical Research for forty years and confirmed by satellite data in 1974; he had won the Nobel Prize in 1970. Each individual case has its own resolution: some are documented institutional actions (Tesla's papers, Reich's books, Schauberger's contract), some have ordinary explanations that suffice (Lakhovsky's hit and run remained unsolved in wartime New York), some are biographical tragedies whose connection to the work is contested in the surviving record (Stubblefield's poverty and his son's posthumous burning of the papers), and one is the structural counterweight where the mainstream itself was provably wrong for forty years (Alfven). What the page does not assert

That any single named figure invented or operated a free energy device. That the cluster is the result of a coordinated single conspiracy. That the mainstream is wrong on the underlying physics. The page applies the same triage the project uses elsewhere: category B for the historical record itself, category C for measurable claims that have not yet been measured on a surviving artefact, category A physics held intact.

02, The roster, seven entries by relevance

From the closest to the antenna thesis (Stubblefield, telluric currents, Kentucky, 1902) outward to the broadest, including the mainstream vindicated case as the third entry from the end.

The ordering below is by relevance to the project's central thesis (the surviving rooftop ornament as a possible aerial element of an integrated atmospheric electrical system) rather than chronological. Stubblefield comes first because his apparatus is the closest historical analog to the foundation end of the project's reading. Tesla comes second for the Colorado Springs standing wave observations and the FBI seizure of his papers. Reich, Schauberger, and Lakhovsky carry the documented institutional destruction or absorption in the three decades the project's destruction page lists. Alfven, the fifth entry, is in the roster precisely because the cluster reads honestly only when a mainstream vindicated case sits inside it. Moray, the seventh, is included because his demonstrations were filmed and the witness records survive textually intact even though the device has not been replicated in eighty years.

1. Nathan Stubblefield

1860 to 1928, Murray Kentucky, USA

Kentucky melon farmer and self taught electrician, the closest historical precedent for the foundation end of the project's atmospheric electrical reading. The first documented public wireless telephony demonstration in the United States was his, in 1902, powered from buried iron and copper electrodes.

What he investigated

Telluric current sampling. Two dissimilar metal electrodes (copper and iron) buried in moist earth with a spiral solenoid between them. The device drew continuous low voltage current from the ground. Stubblefield framed it in his own words: earth batteries do not generate electricity, they intercept and receive ground flowing telluric currents. The 1902 Murray demonstration broadcast voice over a short range using the buried electrodes as both power source and antenna.

Documented institutional response

None at the federal level. Stubblefield was an inventor of modest means in rural Kentucky and was outside the commercial wireless trajectory that Marconi and the US Navy were building. The institutional reception was indifferent rather than hostile. He attempted commercialisation through several short lived companies, lost all of them, and lived in increasing poverty until his death.

What survives

The 1898 patent text. Press accounts of the 1902 demonstration. Several photographs. His personal papers, manuscripts, and surviving prototypes were burned by his son Bernard after Stubblefield's impoverished 1928 death in an unheated shack outside Murray. The Murray State University historical collection holds the surviving public material; nothing of the laboratory record remains.

Status, on the project's triage

Earth battery physics is real (category A, settled). The voltage and current magnitudes Stubblefield's own apparatus could plausibly have produced from buried electrodes are in the microwatt range; the 1902 demonstration almost certainly worked at short range on that power budget. The larger claims attributed to his later (lost) work cannot be evaluated from surviving sources. The closest standing analog to the project's telluric current section in the theory page and the granite page's piezoelectric coupling reading.

2. Nikola Tesla

1856 to 1943, Smiljan to New York City

The standing wave observations in Colorado Springs in summer 1899 predate Schumann's 1952 published derivation of the cavity resonance by fifty three years. Tesla's papers were seized by the FBI within hours of his death and partially declassified seventy three years later.

What he investigated

Wireless power transmission and Earth surface guided waves. The Colorado Springs notes record an observed standing wave during a thunderstorm at a frequency consistent with the Schumann cavity fundamental. Wardenclyffe (1901 to 1917, Shoreham New York) was built to attempt commercial wireless power transmission via the same Earth resonance mechanism. The mainstream twentieth century reading dismissed Tesla's specific 1903 apparatus as confused; the recent literature on Zenneck surface guided waves has partially vindicated the underlying physics, while leaving open whether Wardenclyffe's specific geometry would have worked.

Documented institutional response

January 7 1943: Tesla dies in the Hotel New Yorker. Within hours, the FBI orders the Office of Alien Property to seize his belongings despite his US citizenship. The safe, up to eighty trunks across Manhattan storage units, and a Governor Clinton Hotel safety deposit box were taken. Dr John G. Trump (MIT, the president's uncle) was assigned to evaluate the papers and concluded they had "no new sound workable principles or methods". In 1952 the US court ruled Tesla's nephew Sava Kosanovic the rightful heir and the bulk of the material went to Belgrade. September 21 2016: most of the FBI file was declassified, seventy three years after seizure. Some material remains classified as of the MuckRock 2018 reporting.

What survives

The Belgrade Tesla Museum holds the bulk of the returned material. The Colorado Springs notes survive in full. The patent record is intact. The Wardenclyffe site stood until partial demolition in 1917; the surviving tower base was preserved as a museum site after a 2013 crowdfunding campaign. What remains classified after 2016 has not been independently catalogued.

Status, on the project's triage

Tesla's standing wave observations (Colorado Springs, 1899) are documented in his own handwriting. The Schumann cavity resonance was independently derived by Winfried Otto Schumann in 1952; Tesla observed the same phenomenon fifty three years earlier without naming it. This is the cleanest single anchor for the project's epistemic claim that the surviving record is biased rather than complete: a primary source on a specific atmospheric electrical phenomenon, predating its mainstream derivation by half a century, survived an FBI seizure and a seventy three year classification lag. The Wardenclyffe specific power transmission scheme remains category C, physically debatable and never tested at the full scale Tesla intended.

3. Wilhelm Reich

1897 to 1957, Vienna to Lewisburg Pennsylvania

Austrian psychoanalyst, second generation Freud circle, later (after roughly 1939 in the United States) bioelectrical and atmospheric experimenter. His pre orgone psychoanalytic works were swept into the same court ordered destruction as the contested later material, which is the structural fact that matters for the project's epistemic claim.

What he investigated

Two distinct phases. Phase one (Vienna 1920s, Berlin and Scandinavia 1930s): orthodox psychoanalysis, character structure theory, and the sociopolitical analysis of authoritarianism, published as Character Analysis (1933), The Mass Psychology of Fascism (1933), and The Sexual Revolution (1936). Phase two (United States 1939 onward): bioelectrical experiments on muscular contraction and skin potential, the contested "orgone accumulator" hypothesis, atmospheric experiments around Maine in the 1950s.

Documented institutional response

1947: critical articles in The New Republic and Harper's. The FDA opens a fraud investigation. 1954: federal injunction against interstate shipment of orgone accumulators and associated literature. 1956: Reich charged with contempt for violating the injunction, sentenced to two years. June 26 1956: FDA agents supervise destruction of 251 copies of Reich's books at the FDA office, including the pre orgone psychoanalytic works. August 23 1956: a further six tons of material burned at the Gansevoort Incinerator, New York. November 3 1957: Reich dies of heart failure in Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary, eight months into his sentence.

What survives

The pre 1939 psychoanalytic works, in reprints. The contested orgone literature, partially. The FDA case file, the injunction text, the contempt proceedings, and the inventory of the destroyed material are in the federal court record. The Wilhelm Reich Museum at Orgonon (Rangeley Maine) holds his personal effects, surviving notebooks, and the original apparatus, under a fifty year publication embargo on parts of his papers that expired in 2007.

Status, on the project's triage

The orgone hypothesis is not within the project's scope and is not endorsed here. The structural fact that bears on the project is the documentary destruction itself: the largest book burning in American history by court order swept up pre orgone works on psychoanalysis and the social analysis of fascism, books published before Reich ever discussed orgone. The precedent that fringe equals fraud equals destroy the books is established in US case law from this docket. The project's epistemic claim that the surviving twentieth century record on bioelectrical and atmospheric topics is shaped by destruction, not preserved by completeness, rests on this case and three others.

4. Viktor Schauberger

1885 to 1958, Austria to Texas to Linz

Austrian forester and self taught hydrodynamicist. The August 1958 Brookhaven Texas agreement transferring his lifetime materials to an American consortium, and his death five days after his return to Austria, are the documented institutional moment in his case. Whether his "implosion" technology produced any real effect beyond known vortex hydrodynamics is contested in the surviving record.

What he investigated

Vortex hydrodynamics in flowing water, observed first in Alpine forest streams in the early decades of the twentieth century. Schauberger's prototypes ran water through twisting vortex chambers and claimed energetic or biological effects he framed in terms outside the standard fluid mechanics vocabulary. The known physics of vortex flow in his apparatus is real but ordinary. The claimed beyond ordinary effects have not been independently replicated to mainstream satisfaction.

The Wikipedia entry on Schauberger is the cleanest secondary source. The 1958 Texas agreement and the surrounding correspondence are partially reproduced in family published material; the family's account and the American consortium's account of the transfer disagree on material points.

Documented institutional response

June 1958: Schauberger, 73, travels to Texas at the invitation of Karl Gerchsheimer and the industrialist Robert Donner. Three months in Texas, reported isolated and with limited English. August 15 to 17 1958: an agreement is drawn up at Brookhaven Texas transferring all rights to his inventions, patents, and research to a consortium represented by Gerchsheimer. The family later characterised the agreement as coerced rather than voluntary. All documents, models, prototypes, and equipment were retained in the United States. September 20 1958: Schauberger returns to Austria. September 25 1958: he dies, five days after his return. The Texas held materials remained in Gerchsheimer's possession for years; eventually recovered by Richard Feierabend and returned to the Pythagoras Kepler Schule in Austria over a multi decade delay.

What survives

The German language books, the surviving notebooks, and the eventually returned American material are at the Pythagoras Kepler Schule. The family's account of the 1958 transfer is in their published material. The American consortium's contemporaneous correspondence has not been published in full.

Status, on the project's triage

The category B claim, that the institutional response to Schauberger's lifetime work materially reduced what reached the surviving record, is documented. The category C question, whether his apparatus produced any effect beyond ordinary vortex hydrodynamics, has not been resolved on the returned material. The case is included in the roster because the contractual mechanism (a transfer signed by an isolated 73 year old inventor in a foreign country, with materials retained on the American side for decades) is structurally distinct from the FBI seizure and the court ordered burning in the other cases. The mechanisms vary; the effect on the documentary record is comparable.

5. Hannes Alfven, the mainstream vindicated case

1908 to 1995, Norrkoping to La Jolla

Swedish plasma physicist. His theory that electric currents flow along the Earth's magnetic field lines into the aurora was rejected by the flagship journal of his field for forty years and confirmed by satellite data in 1974. He had won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1970. Included in the roster as the structural counterweight: the mainstream was provably wrong on a documented case, no conspiracy needed, and the correction came from a satellite rather than from a vindication of an outsider.

What he investigated

Magnetohydrodynamics and field aligned electric currents in space plasmas. Alfven proposed in the 1930s and refined through the 1960s that currents flow along the Earth's magnetic field lines from the magnetosphere into the upper atmosphere, exciting the aurora. These are now called Birkeland currents after Kristian Birkeland's earlier work. The competing theory (Sydney Chapman's closed current loop model) ran the currents in horizontal loops in the ionosphere only.

Alfven's paper on field aligned currents was rejected by the Journal of Geophysical Research on the explicit ground that it disagreed with Chapman's closed loop theory. Chapman's theory dominated the field for forty years. Alfven was, in his own word, "treated with condescension" by senior space physicists. 1974: satellite observations from the TRIAD spacecraft and subsequent missions confirmed Alfven's field aligned currents exist. Chapman was wrong. 1970: Alfven won the Nobel Prize in Physics for magnetohydrodynamics, before the satellite confirmation, on the strength of the wider plasma physics body of work.

What survives

The full published record, the textbook, the Nobel lecture, the rejection correspondence in the Alfven personal archive at the Royal Swedish Academy. The satellite data confirming Birkeland currents is now in every space physics textbook. The wider plasma cosmology programme Alfven also pursued remains a minority position in mainstream cosmology, though the role of plasma in cosmological structure is now accepted in detail.

Status, on the project's triage, and why this entry is here

This is the cleanest single case in modern physics where the flagship journal of a field rejected a Nobel laureate's correct theory for forty years in favour of a wrong consensus. No fire, no court order, no contract, no seizure. The mechanism was peer review, methodological deference, and the slow accumulation of senior opinion. The correction arrived via satellite data; without the satellite, the wrong consensus would still hold today. The relevance to the rest of the roster is structural: the historical record reaches us through the same kind of editorial process that rejected Alfven's correct theory for forty years, applied to figures with far less institutional access than a Nobel laureate. When mainstream architectural history says the surviving ornamental ironwork is purely decorative with trivial electrical function, that claim has the same epistemic weight as Chapman's closed current loop theory in 1960. It is the consensus. It may also be wrong. The equivalent of satellite data has not been collected on the rooftops; the project's measurement chapter proposes that audit.

Why this entry is structurally important

40 years rejected, 1970 Nobel, 1974 satellite confirmation

A roster of figures with documented institutional response would, without an Alfven entry, read as a list of victims chosen to fit a single narrative. With Alfven in the roster, the list reads as what it is: a documented data set on how scientific reception fails, with one case where the failure was eventually corrected by orbiting instruments and one Nobel Prize, and several cases where the correction never arrived because the documentary substrate did not survive long enough to settle the question. The Alfven case is the proof that scientific consensus is reversible on a long enough time scale and a clear enough instrumental check. The project's RF audit proposal is the same kind of clear instrumental check, applied to the rooftops the other six cases never had time or resources to measure.

6. Georges Lakhovsky

1869 to 1942, Russia to Paris to New York City

Russian French engineer, developer of the Multiple Wave Oscillator in 1920s Paris. The MWO was a broadband radio frequency exposure device sold to clinics in Paris, Brussels, Warsaw, Rome, and New York. Lakhovsky died in a hit and run in wartime New York in August 1942 that was never solved.

What he investigated

Cellular electromagnetic resonance. Lakhovsky's hypothesis was that living cells behave as electromagnetic oscillators and that broadband radio frequency exposure across a wide spectrum (his apparatus ran from kilohertz to ultrahigh frequency in a single sweep) restored disrupted cellular resonance. Clinical applications were claimed for chronic disease and cancer, reported in pre modern trial standards across European and American hospitals through the 1920s and 1930s.

The claimed cellular resonance mechanism is not within the project's scope and is not endorsed here. The structural fact that bears on the project is the timing: Lakhovsky's death in August 1942 is the opening case in the 1942 to 1958 cluster (1942 Lakhovsky, 1943 Tesla papers seized, 1956 Reich books burned, 1958 Schauberger absorbed). The individual case has an ordinary wartime New York City explanation (hit and run with no surviving driver identification). The cumulative cluster is the cumulative data point. Lakhovsky's specific cellular resonance claims remain in the contested literature; the project does not adjudicate them.

7. Thomas Henry Moray

1892 to 1974, Salt Lake City Utah

Salt Lake City inventor. His "radiant energy" device, claimed in the 1920s to produce kilowatt scale output from no apparent input, was demonstrated publicly dozens of times including miles from any power line. The device has not been replicated in the eighty years since his death; the demonstrations are filmed and the witness records are textually intact.

What he investigated

Atmospheric or cosmic energy harvesting via a claimed solid state detector. Moray's apparatus used a proprietary solid state detector (the construction has been disputed since) that he claimed tapped cosmic radiation or ambient atmospheric electromagnetic energy. Claimed continuous output up to fifty kilowatts. The public demonstrations included sustained operation in remote locations far from any visible power line or storage source.

1944: the United States Rural Electrification Administration paid Moray $25 per day to develop the system. The development relationship did not result in a deployed device. Moray's Salt Lake City laboratory was ransacked multiple times across the 1930s and 1940s. The family received threats. 1940: his son Rulon was shot in the chest at the laboratory. He survived. Moray himself claimed to have been shot at during automobile travel. The device was never commercialised. He died in 1974. The schematics survive in partial form; key construction details for the proprietary solid state detector did not survive in unambiguous form.

What survives

The filmed demonstrations, the witness affidavits, the published book in multiple editions, the 1949 patent (in its narrowed granted form), and family records of the laboratory ransacking and the 1940 shooting incident. No working replica has been built in the eighty years since his death. The proprietary solid state detector's construction is the missing piece.

Status, on the project's triage

The claimed kilowatt scale energy harvesting from ambient cosmic or atmospheric sources is a category A physics challenge: a continuous solid state harvester at that power density would either violate established energy density limits on ambient electromagnetic flux or rely on a mechanism not yet in the physics record. The project does not endorse the underlying claim. Moray's inclusion in the roster is structural: the filmed demonstrations, the witness records, the patent record, and the documented violence against his laboratory and family are intact in the surviving documentary record. The missing piece is the device itself. The reader is invited to evaluate the case on the surviving primary sources rather than on either a vindicating or a dismissive secondary narrative.

03, The Alfven precedent in detail

The flagship journal of a field was wrong for forty years. The correction arrived from a satellite, not from peer pressure.

The Alfven case is detailed in the roster card above; this section is here for the reader who arrives at the page from outside the roster framing and needs the precedent before the cluster. The structural fact is this: in 1939, Hannes Alfven proposed that electric currents flow along the Earth's magnetic field lines into the aurora. The Journal of Geophysical Research rejected the paper because it disagreed with Sydney Chapman's closed current loop theory. Chapman's theory dominated the field for forty years. In 1970, before the satellite confirmation, Alfven won the Nobel Prize in Physics for the broader magnetohydrodynamics body of work. In 1974, satellite observations confirmed his field aligned currents exist. Chapman was wrong. Alfven was right. This is the precedent the project cites when it says the surviving architectural history record on rooftop ornament may be wrong. The mechanism is not conspiracy. The project's measurement chapter proposes the equivalent instrumental check for the rooftops: a three channel RF audit on a sample of intact pre 1914 ornamented buildings, measuring corona currents, the standing wave response of the surviving down conductor, and the telluric current sampled through the grounding system. The audit is the satellite. The rooftops are the aurora. The forty year wrong consensus is the surviving architectural history reading, and the question of whether that reading is in fact wrong is open until the audit runs.

The temporal clustering across the roster is in the surviving record. Lakhovsky dies in New York City in August 1942. Tesla's papers are seized in January 1943. Reich's books are burned in 1956. Schauberger's lifetime work is absorbed in 1958. Stubblefield's papers were burned posthumously by his son in 1928, and his own death from poverty had happened earlier the same year. The five cases span 1928 to 1958, a window of thirty years that overlaps in detail with the 1914 to 1965 discontinuity the destruction page lists in its main timeline. Alfven's institutional rejection runs from 1939 to 1974, the same window extended forward. Moray's apparatus, demonstrated publicly through the 1920s and 1930s, sits inside the same window.

The destination is comparable: a researcher whose work touched atmospheric electrical, earth current, bioelectrical, or wireless power topics had a documented institutional response that materially reduced what reached the surviving record. Five cases in thirty years, sharing topic adjacency and outcome adjacency, with five different mechanisms, is what the project surfaces as the cluster pattern.

What the cluster shows

The surviving twentieth century documentary record on atmospheric electrical, earth current, bioelectrical, and wireless power research is shaped by institutional response, not preserved by completeness. The mechanism varies across cases. The effect on what reaches the surviving record is comparable across cases. Five distinct institutional mechanisms across five cases in thirty years, on topic adjacent research, is a structural fact about the record; it is not an editorial assertion about intent.

What the cluster does not show

The cluster does not show that any one of the five named figures invented or operated a free energy device. The cluster does not show that the mechanisms are coordinated under a single agent. The cluster does not show that the mainstream physics in the period under discussion was wrong on the underlying laws. The Alfven case shows that the mainstream can be wrong on an empirical interpretation for forty years; the underlying laws of magnetohydrodynamics are not in dispute and Alfven himself did not dispute them. The same distinction applies to the project's reading of the rooftops: the underlying laws of electromagnetism are not in dispute, and the question on the table is the empirical interpretation of a specific class of surviving artefact, not the physics those artefacts participate in.

The Alfven precedent at the centre of this page is the project's instrument: the same kind of clear empirical check that corrected Chapman in 1974 is what the RF audit at the measurement chapter proposes for the rooftops.
